Global Health at Risk by Daily Electromagnetic Fields
Chronic EMF-associated diseases: everyone is at potential risk
Urgent need for a precautionary approach

Ongoing developments in biomedical sciences increase worldwide consensus amongst leading life scientists that the multitude of cellular changes induced by non-ionizing electromagnetic fields may over several years bioaccumulate into a range of serious health problems, due to prolonged exposure at levels significantly below the current exposure guidelines. These fast emerging long-term risks form a wide and major threat for public health.

Description

IEMFA is the International Electro-Magnetic Fields Alliance, supported by an independent and growing global body of empirically-based scientific experts on living processes, with a multilevel, multidisciplinary health focus. The Experts cover a wide range of Biological, -Physics, -Medical and Epidemiologic disciplines, ranging from electron and molecular level to the level of living cells, tissues and the functioning of different organ systems. They cooperate worldwide to supply a coherent, multilevel insight into the chaotic multitude of observed biological disruptions when exposed to non-ionizing radiation, addressing important long-term degradation threats for public health. IEMFA collaborates with leading life-science institutions and non-governmental organizations worldwide.

Mission

Principal aim of the International EMF Alliance is to disseminate coherent, health-oriented information and advice on the rapidly growing body of knowledge on deeper biological disruptions observed in living tissues after exposure to relatively low environmental levels of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields produced by technical equipment. It includes the assessment of related long-term health risks when chronically exposed and scientific publication of biology-based exposure guidelines.
By shifting the perspective from predominantly physics-theoretical expectations of radiation risks, into empirically-based biological knowledge, and by supplying integrative bio-accumulative information, the Alliance promotes a new approach for risk assessment of prolonged EMFs that is consistent with the biological complexity of living beings. In this way the Alliance aims to contribute to long-term public-health merits, by preventing a range of plausible chronic EMF diseases. IEMFA’s supplementary, long-term-oriented information and advice is primarily addressed to national and international governments and health authorities.

Guidelines

The International EMF Alliance primarily focuses on the widely-used frequencies of electromagnetic radiation, of which there is still limited understanding with regards to the long-term health effects. It includes low frequencies related to the use of sources of electricity, and radio-frequencies related to the use of various wireless applications. The majority of information provided by the Alliance is published in the form of scientific reviews, advisory reports and proceedings of scientific meetings. The outcomes of these reviews have resulted in the publication of Empirically-based Exposure Guidelines preventing Chronic Health Risks for society (see publication below). These will be further promoted by the Alliance. In line with this, IEMFA urges global governments, authorities and citizens to take substantial precautionary measures for environment and health.

Stakeholder Dialogue Group on EMF:
Workshop on Risk Communication – Electromagnetic Fields and Human Health

On 20 February 2013, the European Commission held a workshop in Brussels on EMF "risk communication about electromagnetic fields".

The presentations

European Citizens' Initiative "Electromagnetic Radiation"

Aim: to prepare the Support Committee for an ECI on January 2014 concerning the regulation of electromagnetic fields and gather at least seven countries around one or many common claiming’s to settle it down. The real goal is to gain one million signatures in order to register the ECI on the daily program of the European Commission agenda.

Method: the countries of the EU who wish the join this action, must consult the european treaties and mention the article from the treaty on which they take on. The countries write their own strong demands. Then, the demands must be written, if it is possible, with the help of a lawyer who is specialist in environmental and European law. The countries that support the ECI must then send to France to the Sans Onde Association, which centralize the action, their documents with the logo of the concerned associations. All the demands of the seven countries will be send, step by step, to each of the correspondent of the countries wich support the ECI.

WHAT IS IT: A report by 29 independent scientists and health experts from around the world* about possible risks from wireless technologies and electromagnetic fields. It updates the BioInitiative 2007 Report.

WHAT IT COVERS: The science, public health, public policy and global response to the growing health issue of chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation in the daily life of billions of people around the world. Covers brain tumor risks from cell phones, damage to DNA and genes, effects on memory, learning, behavior, attention; sleep disruption and cancer and neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. Effects on sperm and miscarriage (fertility and reproduction), effects of wireless on the brain development of the fetus and infant, and effects of wireless classrooms on children and adolescents is addressed. Mechanisms for biological action and public health responses in other countries are discussed. Therapeutic use of very low intensity EMF and RFR are addressed.

WHAT IS NEW: This update covers about 1800 new studies reporting bioeffects and adverse health effects of electromagnetic fields (powerlines, electrical wiring, appliances and hand-held devices) – and wireless technologies (cell and cordless phones, cell towers, WI-FI, wireless laptops, wireless routers, baby monitors, surveillance systems, wireless utility meters (‘smart meters’), etc.

*The BioInitiative 2012 Report has been prepared by 29 authors from ten countries*, ten holding medical degrees (MDs), 21 PhDs, and three MsC, MA or MPHs. Among the authors are three former presidents of the Bioelectromagnetics Society, and five full members of BEMS. One distinguished author is the Chair of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation. Another is a Senior Advisor to the European Environmental Agency. Each year, about 100,000 people visit the site. In the five years since it’s publication, the BioInitiative website has been accessed over 10.5 million times, or four times every minute. Every five minutes on the average, a person somewhere in the world has logged on. More than 5.2 million files and 1 million pages of information has been downloaded. That is equivalent to more than 93,000 full copies of the 650+ page report (288.5 million kbytes).
